Why Pastoral Care Matters

Ministry Burnout Statistics –

  • 42% of U.S. pastors said they “seriously considered” quitting full-time ministry in the past year.
  • Among those, 56% cited “immense stress of the job” as a factor, 43% said they feel “lonely and isolated,” and 38% named “current political divisions” as a reason.
  • Barna also found that more than one-third of pastors are at medium or high risk of burnout (11% high risk, 26% medium risk).

Biblical Foundation – When something is described as “Biblically grounded”, it means that it is rooted in the teachings, principles, and truths of Scripture. Essentially, it is based on the Bible as the ultimate authority and standard for thought, behavior, and decision-making.

Credentials

Credentials of Cord of 3

Cord of 3 is a nonprofit ministry that has worked in Southeast Georgia for 18 years.  We are recognized as a provider for the American Association of Christian Counselors and by Focus on the Family Counselor Referral Network.

Credentials of our counselors

Our counselors are all master’s level or higher clinicians with degrees in Professional Counseling or Marriage and Family Therapy. Degrees include:  Master level, Specialist level, and PhD level clinicians.  We are all licensed or licensed eligible with the state of Georgia (licensed eligible means they are completing the necessary supervision requirements post-master’s degree for the Georgia licensure board).  Some hold specialized certifications such as:  Certified Addictions Counselor II (CAC II), Registered Play Therapist (RPT), Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor (CPCS), National Board Certification (NBC), Trauma Counselor Certification (STAR & TF-CBT), and various other certifications.

The standard by which we provide biblical and clinical counseling

Cord of 3 provides sound clinical counseling in that we use evidence based models of therapy to guide the treatment planning and interventions used with the families we serve.  These models are:  Structural Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Strategic Trauma Abuse and Recovery.  We do not use any models that hold a humanistic worldview as the tenets of therapy.  While our counselors are trained with all the theories of counseling, we are selective in which models we use so that we can maintain the integrity of Biblical Truth in the counseling sessions.

Cord of 3 provides sound Biblical Counseling on two levels.

  1. The majority of our counselors have graduated with their master’s degree in Christian Counseling which leads them to an integrative model of Biblical/Pastoral counseling for licensure as a Professional Counselor.  They have graduated from colleges such as Liberty University, Richmont Graduate University, and Regents University.  These master’s programs are uniquely and unapologetically Christian and Biblical in their approach.
  2. Cord of 3 has implemented certain measures into our practices that help us maintain the integrity of the Biblical side of our counseling.  All new hires at Cord of 3 go through a 40 week Integration training conducted by the Executive Director which walks them through the Nouthetic Counseling model for Biblical Counseling.  In addition to this, Counselors are required to attend a certain # of hours of supervision monthly with a specific focus of supervision being on the Biblical integrity of the counseling we provide.  Finally, all staff members are a part of a weekly Spiritual Formation group where we are looking at scripture and its application to our lives.

We communicate with all of the families we serve that we believe the Bible, not psychology, is the authority on life. Therefore, this changes the approach that we take to the counseling sessions.  We then have certain measures we monitor to make sure the Bible is used as the standard for all counseling sessions.

To be employed with Cord of 3, it is a requirement that you are an active member of a healthy Bible believing church in order to provide counseling to families.

Also, in every treatment plan with the families we serve, we have a specific focus on cultivating the “client’s” identity in Christ.  A successful discharge from counseling at Cord of 3 includes the family having gone through this ‘Identity in Christ’ counseling and we look for the fruit of the spirit as our primary outcome measure in this area.

Cord of 3 monitors the spiritual health of the staff through 3 parameters

  1. A Monthly balance wheel which assesses the components of a counselor’s spiritual life.
  2. An annual Professional Development Plan which assesses the counselor’s annual goals for spiritual growth. We monitor progress made on those goals on a monthly basis.
  3. A bi-monthly one on one check-in by the Executive Director with each counselor to talk about their walk with God.

Our Statement of Faith

As a Christian agency, Cord of 3 does reserve the right to screen employees on the basis of our statement of faith.  We expect all employees to agree to and to abide within our statement of faith.

  • We believe in one true and living God:  The Father, Son and Holy Spirit;  that these Three are One, and are harmoniously equal in infinite power, wisdom, justice, holiness, mercy, love and truth.
  • We believe that God created man good, able to stand but liable to fall, and that man fell from this pure estate and brought himself under condemnation and death, and that man is wholly unable to deliver himself from this condition.
  • We believe that God chose a people unto salvation or eternal life and that this choice was eternal, particular, and unconditional.
  • We believe that God was in Christ and that by the sacrifice of Jesus, all whom God chose unto salvation were forever redeemed from the curse of the law and made righteous in Him.
  • We believe that all who were redeemed by the Son, will in time be effectually called by the Holy Spirit, “Born Again”, and made partakers of the Divine nature.
  • We believe that all who are regenerated (effectually called) will be finally saved.  Not one can be finally lost.
  • We believe that the bodies of all men will be resurrected from the grave and that the joys of the righteous will be eternal and that the punishment of the wicked everlasting.
  • We believe that all who are called of God, are under obligation to do good works, and that in keeping of His Commandments, there is great reward.
  • We believe that the Church is the highest ecclesiastical authority on earth, subject alone under God for all her acts and that her form of government is congregational, each member having an equal voice in all her acts.  Each employee MUST be an active member of a local conservative Bible believing church.  The Executive Director is the sole discretionary decision maker on what constitutes a conservative Bible believing church.
  • We believe the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments (of which we consider the King James Translation to be the best) to be the inspired word of God.  And that they alone are to govern God’s People both in faith and practice.

Cord of 3 Nonprofit Alliance Program

Our Nonprofit Alliance Program is dedicated to empowering other nonprofits to thrive through Kingdom-focused principles, guiding them toward sustainability and growth in Program Development, Strategic Planning, Advancement, Financial Accounting, and Capital Campaign management. We offer tiered service levels to meet nonprofits at their stage of development and growth goals.

Training and Discipleship

The Cord of 3 training and discipleship program serves the community by offering educational seminars on various mental health and related topics (parenting subjects, coping with loss, warning signs of addiction) as well as conferences, retreats, and seminars for area churches on matters that pertain to God’s design for the family.

Counselor Education & Supervision

Cord of 3’s Counselor education and supervision program is deigned to support interns who are completing their master’s degree, counselors who are working toward licensure, and professionals who are working to integrate their Chritian faith into their clinical practice.

Equine Therapy

Cord of 3’s equine therapy program is designed for individuals ages 7 and up as well as women ages 13+ and families. Equine therapy can help individuals and families overcome challenges, cuiltivate healthy relational skills, build trust, improve interpersonal and behavioral functioning, and create positive self-concept and identity in Christ.

Play God’s Way

A Christ-centered play therapy model to meet the spiritual, emotional, and mental health needs of children. Through play therapy, children learn to accept responsibility for behavior, engage in healthy coping strategies, acquire problem-solving skills, develop empathy for others, and gain an understanding of identity in Christ.

ADDICTION RECOVERY

Addictions always originate in pain… The question is never ‘why the addiction?,’ but rather ‘why the pain?’” (Dr. Gabor Maté). Counselors can help those struggling with addictions address underlying painful issues and then break the addictive patterns.

Child & Adolescent

Behavioral issues at home or in school often have an underlying cause, such as trauma, depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions. The experienced staff at Cord of 3 meets each child with love, builds trust, and applies effective treatment that approaches the root cause of the behavior.

Marriage & Family

As in couple’s counseling, family counseling focuses on the relationship and dynamics within the family unit and between the individual members of it. Counselors will help clients identify unhealthy or unhelpful patterns, and to address them by developing healthier communication and conflict resolutions skills, create realistic expectations, and restructure familial roles to benefit everyone. The ultimate goal is to help the family be better able to thrive as a team.

STRESS & TRAUMA

Every person will at some point have at least one potentially traumatic experience, but this doesn’t impact everyone in the same ways. When struggling to process and move on from negative life experiences, therapy offers a powerful method of finding support and healing.

EMOTIONAL WHOLENESS

Individual counseling can help overcome the sometimes overwhelming fear and hopelessness by helping you better understand the conditions that led to the emotional brokenness you are experiencing, and applying healthy coping skills against them.
