Romans 8:37 (KJV) Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. In order to be a conqueror, you must possess certain qualities. The qualities of a conqueror includes being a strong, courageous, battle ready, disciplined, and fearless warrior. David was a warrior king. You could see his warrior greatness when he marched down into the valley to battle against the giant Goliath. He demanded that the philistine give account of who he thought he was to stand, an uncircumcised Philistine, against the army of the Living God. David, even as a young man, was a fearless warrior who stood when all the other Israelite soldiers were cowering in their tents. It was a great day of victory for David and for the nation of Israel. Finally, a man who was a true warrior had emerged and the nation celebrated his success. And yet, It is with great sorrow of heart that we later see, during the time for Kings to be out at war, David remain home and with lustful desire, he laid down those qualities of a conqueror which quickly led to him being slain by the giant of lust. His lustful adulterous affair with Bathsheba led him to a series of rebellious and foolish lies and acts of “self” control that ultimately came to a head when he gave an order to have Uriah murdered. The warrior king was slain by his own lust.
Lust is a desire and craving, a longing for something that is forbidden. Our flesh lusts after things that isn’t ours to have. We lust after money, possessions, status, looks, beauty, positions, and even sexuality. The lust of the flesh is unrelenting, it is never satisfied, and it will never release you from its grip. Once in the grip of lust, like the cowards hiding in the tents, we will lay down the weapons of our warfare which then leads us down a path of rebellious and foolish lies and acts of “self” control that ultimately will come to a head with emotional and spiritual death. In 2 Timothy 2:26, we see the description that this snare of lust is equivalent to being taken captive by satan to do his will. We must remember, as Soldiers of Jesus Christ, that the only way that we can overcome the grip of lust is if we soldier on for our Lord. “Nay, in all these things we are more than CONQUERORS through him that loved us” (Romans 8:37). We must remember, that the only victory over the sin of lust is realized in Jesus Christ. Consider these passages of scriptures about lust:
Psalm 81:12 (KJV) So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: [and] they walked in their own counsels. Proverbs 6:25 (KJV) Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids. Matthew 5:28 (KJV) But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Romans 1:27 (KJV) And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. Romans 7:7 (KJV) What shall we say then? [Is] the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. 1 Corinthians 10:6 (KJV) Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Galatians 5:16 (KJV) [This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. James 1:14 (KJV) But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. James 1:15 (KJV) Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 2 Peter 2:10 (KJV) But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous [are they], selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. 1 John 2:16 (KJV) For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
